Effective Date: | August 28, 2001 | |||
SCS/SB 284 - This act recognizes American sign language (ASL) as a distinct language. State educational institutions may offer ASL elective courses. ASL may be treated as a foreign language for course credit granting purposes. Students may receive credit for completing an ASL course or demonstrating ASL proficiency if the institution offers ASL courses and offers similar credit for completing courses or demonstrating proficiency in another foreign language.
Academic credit for ASL may be counted toward foreign language requirements. ASL courses completed in secondary school and demonstrated proficiency in ASL may be counted toward foreign language entrance requirements.
The Missouri Commission for the Deaf may provide assistance
with ASL courses upon the request of an institution.
